Adder's-tongue fern is now quite rare and is considered to be a good indicator of ancient meadows. It is an unusual fern that grows in old grassland, on hillsides, along woodland rides and on sand dunes. It usually appears between May and August, spending the rest of the year underground as a rhizome. There used to be more plants around the pond area but they are hard to protect from mowing as they are not obvious.  Fortunately we have recently discovered new colonies alongside the main blackthorn hedge.  They could easily be more common than generally realised as they are so easily missed.
