The lower meadow is original unimproved meadow. During the 1970's the grass sward was removed to grow chrysanthemums, this enabled the wild flowers to spread. While it is just a small fragment it is valuable ecologically as there is so little unimproved lowland meadow left in the U.K. It is very rich in flora & fauna. The most striking of these are substantial swathes of cowslip (Primula veris) and Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria).  For more information on lowland meadows go to the
